My name is Val Howes–welcome to my blog, Open Kitchen!
Here I share stories about people with a passion for food; I sweet-talk celebrated chefs and fearsome matriarchs into divulging their secret recipes; and I spread the word about extraordinary culinary destinations and events–in Canada and beyond.
I wrote my first post (about Nigella Lawson’s Red Velvet Cupcakes) in December 2010, as food editor of Reader’s Digest Canada. Since then, Open Kitchen has been nominated for three Canadian Online Publishing Awards, taking Silver in 2011 and Gold in 2013. It was also named Best Blog at the 2013 Canadian Society of Magazine Editors Awards. In December 2013, I went freelance and took full ownership of Open Kitchen.
