Toronto Cooks “Eat the Book” Contest

28 Nov

Amy Rosen just launched a contest that will have you high-kicking your way through the streets of Toronto, if you win.

She is the author of Toronto Cooks, a new cookbook featuring 100 recipes by 50 chefs from some of the best restaurants in Toronto. The dishes are easy enough to whip up at home; we’re talking: beet relish, tuna ceviche, ginger pear tarts…

“I wanted this to be more than a coffee table book,” says Amy. “I wanted it to be the kind of beat-up book that ends up covered in batter and sauce.”

Since Toronto Cooks came out, a few weeks ago, readers have been going into the restaurants from the book to collect autographs and take photos with the chefs or they’ve been trying out the dishes at home, to share on social media. So Amy decided to turn this spontaneous activity into a competition, with a jaw-dropping prize for one lucky person: a stash of restaurant gift certificates amounting to over $1,600 $1,800.

Full details are below. Amy will be announcing her winner on January 1, 2015. And if you’d like to try a recipe from the book, look out for my next post on Cauliflower Coleslaw from chefs Conor Joerin and Scott Pennock, of the Emerson.

Good luck!

TORONTO COOKS ‘Eat the Book’ CONTEST

Welcome to the richest prize in Toronto-themed cookbook contests!

We actually pinched this idea from Tweets and Instagrams of happy “Toronto Cooks” owners who are already doing this: They’re eating the book. Basically, they’re cooking their way through the book while also trying to visit all of the restaurants, to both eat at and get their books signed by their culinary heroes. Leading up to the holidays, we figured this would have the makings of a great social media contest. So here we go…

How does it work? Eager eaters will visit as many of the restaurants featured in “Toronto Cooks” as they can, and take a photo of themselves in the restaurant with the chef, with the book, or of their delicious meal or snack. Then they’ll tag the photo #TorontoCooks and mention what restaurant they’re in.

On January 1st, 2015 we’ll put all of the entries into a toque and pull out one winner. And what’s the winner-takes-all grand prize? Over $1600 in gift certificates to restaurants including Geraldine ($100), Bannock ($50), Kerelia Kitchen ($50), Tabule ($50), Drake One Fifty ($50), The Drake Hotel ($50), Linda Modern Thai ($50), The Emerson ($100), 360 The Restaurant at the CN Tower ($200), Café Boulud ($100), Mercatto ($100), Momofuku Milkbar ($25), The Harbord Room ($50), Edulis ($150), Glas Wine Bar ($50), Nota Bene ($150), Ezra’s Pound ($25), Farmhouse Tavern ($50), Vertical ($100) Dufflet ($50), Jelly Modern Doughnuts ($25) Glory Hole Doughnuts ($25)

Happy New Year, indeed! You may only enter once per restaurant, but the more restaurants you visit and tag, the better your chances. Start making those reservations, people: The contest launches December 1st. 2014.

Tip: Best to link photo entries to Twitter, otherwise be sure your Instagram account is unlocked. Must be 19 or older to enter.
