Grain Brain

Calgarian artisan bread company Sidewalk Citizen Bakery just started packaging their loaves in the thinking man’s bread bag. I think these quote-stamped, two-handled paper bags represent a classy evolution from the traditional baguette clutched under arm. Here Michal Lavi–who co-owns Sidewalk Citizen with her life partner, master baker Aviv Fried–talks about her brainchild:

Bread Bag

“The quote is from The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas, by American novelist, poet and playwright Gertrude Stein. It recounts the first time Gertrude and Picasso met in her apartment in Paris. Gertrude Stein lived on the Left Bank for 40 years and used to have legendary Saturday salons with some of Europe and America’s most prominent writers and artists. Picasso was one frequent guest. Hemingway was another.”

“As book lovers, we wanted to have bread-related quotes on our bags for a long time–specifically ones that communicate great passion, as we are passionate about bread. We’ve collected many quotes from books we love, but ultimately, this one was our favourite. It has it all: bread, violence, art, friendship. We love to imagine this moment: Picasso and Stein fighting, then bonding, over bread.”
