Canadian Chefs Winning Instagram

The best chefs on Instagram go off-menu: among their tantalizing food shots are candid snaps from their kitchens, tattoo parlours and wilderness weekends. Here are some of my favourites to follow. Feast your eyes:

A prolific poster, Connie de Sousa, chef co-owner of CHARCUT Roast House, Calgary lets you in on everything from her triathlon training to her sausage parties. My favourite snap: this alligator selfie.  @conniedesousa

Connie’s mentor and partner-in-crime at CHARCUT (and another big fan of the sausage), John Jackson, is a master of selfies. Look out for the heart-melting photos of his little girl, hashtagged #Charbaby. @CHARCUT

Ribs, boudin and offal make up the meat of Scott Vivian’s postings. But the chef co-owner of Beast in Toronto always leaves room for doughnuts–fantasy doughnuts brought to life. We’re talking Curried Coconut with Lime Ginger Icing or Margarita-Lime Curd-filled and tequila-iced with a sprinkling of lime zest and Maldon salt. #PleaseSirCanIHaveSomeMore? @scottvivian

In between shots of clams, foraged mushrooms and violet-glazed eclairs, David McMillan of Joe Beef in Montreal curates vintage pics of everything from an ice canoe, to a pond hockey match to the Joe Beef Star Tavern of yesteryear. @joebeefmtl

Jesse Vergen (soon to be a contender on Season 4 of Top Chef Canada) is Executive Chef at St John Ale House in New Brunswick, as well as a hunter and an organic farmer. His posts reflect the full forest-shore-and-field-to-table experience. @jessevergen

The new executive chef at the almost-open Drake Devonshire Inn, in Prince Edward County, Ontario–Matthew DeMille–shares a whole lot of mini-me toddler cuteness (think: two-year-old son and proud dad in matching red lumberjack shirts), as well as comfort foods like this… @mattyfood

Jason Bangerter, the new Executive Chef at Relais & Chateau property Langdon Hall, in Cambridge, Ontario, is an artist. The end.  @langdonhallchef

Another Top Chef Canada season 4 contender, Pierre Lamielle is already Calgary-famous for his food-themed T-shirts. Canadian domination coming soon? @foodonyourshirt

Chef-owner of Maison Publique, Montreal, Derek Dammann alternates between sublime shots of golden-topped salt-cod gratin or paper-thin slices of red-wine ham and fave film quotes chalked with love. @maisonpublique

Fish, friends and rugged Newfoundland landscapes are recurring themes for Jeremy Charles (Executive Chef of Raymonds, St John’s). @jeremycharles77

For some Prairies gorgeousness, check out the farm-to-plate videos posted by Chef-owner Dale Mackay of Ayden Kitchen and Bar, in Saskatoon. @aydenkitchenbar

Binky Holleran’s postings from her Montreal Specialty Grocery Store and Cafe, Fuchsia Epicerie Fleur, are an ode to furry creatures, favourite customers and edible flowers. @fuchsiaepiceriefleur

Chef-owner of Mallard Cottage, in St John’s, Newfoundland, Todd Perrin has charted the progress of his restaurant from construction site to Quidi Vidi hotspot over the past year. Bonus: guest appearances from his smiley daughter-slash-pickling assistant. Hashtag: #Skid. @mallardcottagechef

The resident Instagrammer for Calgary’s Hotel Arts spreads the love for all the boutique hotel’s kitchen and bar staff. This Miley Cyrus wrecking ball pumpkin video may be my favourite Instagram post of all time:  @hotelartsyyc

Chef Jonathan Goodyear of The Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Toronto, consistently wows with his artistry. Love his posts; dream of eating at his restaurant. @jonathangoodyear

There’s a whole lot of joie de vivre and kitchen hotness in the postings of Chef Danny Smiles, of Le Bremner, Montreal. Exhibit A: Dishwasher in crown.  ♥  @lebremnermtl

OK, so in creating this post, I’m well aware some provinces and territories are seriously underrepresented. So now it’s your turn to tell me about your favourite Instagramming Canadian chefs. Go nuts in the comments section!

Given all the taste bud teasing he did in the lead-up to the opening of Bar Buca (not to mention his fantastic shots of his travels and yoga sessions), I believe Rob Gentile (@Robb_Gentile) belongs on this great list.

I drool over Chef Antonio Park (@chefantoniopark) of Park Restaurant in Montreal’s instagram daily. You should too.
